Review by Hans J. Wollstein

Edward Chodorov's 1935 Broadway play got the B-movie treatment later that year courtesy of veteran MGM hack George B. Seitz, who may have earned his laurels in action serials but was rather out of his league with psychological suspense. Added to a miscast director is a miscast Aline MacMahon as the generous old maid whose household is invaded by a gang of murderous swindlers. Very good with a quip or two in Warner Bros. musical extravaganzas, MacMahon is not convincing here and certainly not in a league with Grace George, who had played the role on Broadway, or Ethel Barrymore, who brought an inner strength to MGM's fine 1951 remake. Besides, anyone who trusts Basil Rathbone enough to let him gain access to her invaluable paintings gets what she deserves.
