Funnyman Will Ferrell has a problem and it's that his personal projects far outweigh the standard Hollywood slop that he agrees to -- Kicking & Screaming being one of the worst-case scenarios. Though the flick starts out fairly entertaining, with Ferrell mining the whole uptight soccer dad role, it all goes viciously downhill as soon as he takes control of his son's team. As the movie slides into a terminal free fall, you wonder just who thought this material was good enough in the first place. The kids are overacting hams and directed with an abandon that obviously allowed a lot of leeway for the obnoxious tikes. And once Ferrell gets reeled in on this half-cocked coffee-addiction subplot, even he loses any likability that came off in the first reel. Mike Ditka and Robert Duvall don't help too much at all, with only minute laughs coming from both of them throughout their poorly staged gags. In the end, it seems that director Jesse Dylan has still not learned anything from his absolutely horrid American Wedding sequel, which accounts for the tonal shifts and utter lack of focus in his direction. Kids might like it if only for the silly slapstick comedy, but parents best stay away from this annoying and long-winded foul ball of a flick.
