Producer-director J. Stuart Blackton briefly parted company with his home studio Vitagraph to helm the Paramount production The Judgment House. Based on a story by Sir Gilbert Parker, the film is set in London and South Africa during the Boer War (though many of the exteriors were filmed near Blackton's baronial estate in Oyster Bay, Long Island!) Violet Heming stars as the vacillating heroine Jasmine, whose inability to choose among her suitors profoundly alters the lives of three men -- including the one she loves the least, and whom she finally selects as her husband. The outcome of the plot is contingent upon the curious behavior of native servant Krool (played by Native American actor Crazy Thunder), who turns out to be the most honorable character in the picture. Despite its preponderance of plot and characters, The Judgment House managed to tell its tale within a mere six reels (or 75 minutes).
