Synopsis by Mark Deming

Two women confront the downsides of friendship in this stylish and offbeat comedy from Australian director Louise Alston. Jackie (Cindy Nelson) and Lucy (Francesca Gasteen) are best friends in their mid-twenties who have been so close for so long folks regard them as a single entity, "Jucy." Jackie and Lucy share an apartment, work undemanding jobs at a video store, smoke a lot of marijuana and hang out with their geeky friends, but some folks describe them as "straight lesbians" or "friends with emotional benefits" and think they're wasting their lives. Tired of being the butt of jokes, Jackie and Lucy decide it's time they showed the world they can function like normal adults -- Jackie will find a boyfriend, Lucy will land a better job, and they'll develop more mature interests. The two are cast in a revisionist adaptation of Jane Eyre at a local community theater, Jackie starts dating Trevor (Damien Freeleagus) and Lucy gets a sensible outfit and starts taking interviews. But it's still an open question if the gals are ready to start living like adults, especially when bi-polar Jackie decides she's "sane" enough to stop taking her medication. Jucy received its North American premiere at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival.
