Synopsis by Hal Erickson
Before going any further in describing this animated children's series, it is important to note that "torch" is the British term for "flashlight." The titular Jamie, accompanied by his wool hat-wearing dog Wordsworth, launched each adventure by repairing to his room and switching on his "magic torch" -- whereupon both boy and dog were whisked off to the color fantasy world of Cuckooland. The animation style was obviously patterned after the psychedelic designs seen in the Beatles' Yellow Submarine; indeed, one of the principal characters was a pint-sized sub commander named Mr. Boo. Produced by Cosgrove-Hall, the same firm responsible for Danger Mouse and Count Duckula, Jamie and the Magic Torch yielded 39 ten-minute episodes between 1976 and 1979.
