Synopsis by Cecilia Cygnar
This documentary, part of the A&E Investigative Reports series, goes inside the Addicts Rehabilitation Center (ARC) in the Harlem area of New York City. Narrated by producer and host Bill Kurtis, this episode explores the history of the ARC, which was founded in 1958 by James Allen. Since then, over 25,000 men and women have been treated in the ARC program. By combining continual dialogue along with spiritual support, the ARC helps drug addicts clean up their lives. Investigative Reports interviews some of the workers of the ARC, many of whom are former addicts and graduates of the Center, and three addicts who are currently struggling with the ARC system. The addicts talk about how the ARC is helping them and how they worry about life after the Center, with the continual temptation of drugs sold on the streets of Harlem.
