Synopsis by Alice Day
Sleep is essential to life; if humans are not allowed to sleep, they will die. It is taken for granted that humans need a certain amount of sleep for good health, yet scientists do not fully understand the mechanisms of sleep. In Innovators: The Dark Side of the Clock, researchers discuss sleep disorders, which can take many forms, including sleep apnea and narcolepsy. Individuals who suffer from sleep apnea stop breathing many times during the night and are lethargic the following day. Narcoleptics have an uncontrollable urge to sleep at unpredictable times of the day.
