Synopsis by Alice Day
Statistics indicate that one out of every three Americans is obese, and the extra weight puts these people at high risk for heart disease, diabetes, stroke, and certain cancers. Innovators: Fat of the Land looks at the causes of the problem, which results from a tendency toward sedentary behavior and the easy availability of foods high in saturated fat. Dieting is not a solution for many individuals, because the brain has a mechanism for maintaining a certain weight, called a set point. Research into possible answers include hormonal therapy and investigation of genes associated with obesity.
