Synopsis by Janiss Garza
"There isn't much that can be said about In the Spider's Web," wrote the critic at Moving Picture World, "It is just one of those things. Five reels or so of this and that." The origins of this independently made drama are murky, but the presence of French actor Charles Vanel suggests that it was made in Europe. Polly Powers (Alice Dean) is a Follies dancer who has an illegitimate son with Stephen Powers (Vanel). When he abandons her, she has a nervous breakdown on-stage. She comes under the care of Dr. Charles Maynard (Howard Hampton), who offers to marry her when she lies and tells him that she is a widow. But Powers shows up at the Maynard country estate and becomes friends with the doctor without revealing his identity or his true motives. What he wants is to get his hands on the boy (Jean Paul Baer), and he convinces Polly that his father will leave his fortune to the youngster if he is brought to meet him. While Polly goes to Powers apartment to make arrangements, Powers goes to the Maynard home to kidnap the child. He barricades himself and his son in a bedroom, and Maynard forcefully breaks the door down. He finds the child safe and sound, but Powers has committed suicide.
