Synopsis by Sandra Brennan
This Chinese satire effectively skewers rural village life as it tells the tale of shy 30-year old signal station manager Mai Quiang, a resident of Wushan, a dull little burg located along the Yangste River. His job is to change a sign that shows boats which way to travel on the river. One day his pal Wu Ban and his girl friend Lily drop by for a visit. At Wu's seeming insistence, Lily and Mai end up in bed. Meanwhile back in town, small hotel manager Lao Mo finds himself increasingly attracted to the widow Chen Quing, his desk manager. He creates all kinds of trouble when he goes to soon-to-be-married police officer Wu Gang and tells him that he thinks Mai raped Chen. The cop begins investigating and chaos ensues.
