The eastern part of the island of New Guinea, called Papua, was under Australian control until 1975. Some six years before, Indonesia took control of the western portion, called Irian, from the Dutch. This documentary film explores the new country's exotic first general election, as former headhunters fight election battles with women's groups and form alliances and trade agreements. Ileksen was paid for by the winning party.
