Synopsis by Hal Erickson
Hosted by Clive Anderson, the British game show If I Ruled the World was as much a satirical comedy as anything else. On each half-hour episode, celebrity team captains Graeme Garden and Jeremy Hardy impersonated the leaders of two fictitious political parties, the Red and the Blue. Points were scored depending upon the captains' success in answering straightforward questions without giving a straightforward answer. There was no room for a "Yes" or a "No" on this program; as was often the case with genuine politicians, it was all a matter of "what your definition of 'is' is." At the end of the program, the audience decided which of two parties to "elect" on the basis of their non-answers. Assembled by Hat Trick Productions, If I Ruled the World debuted over BBC2 on February 27, 1998, and lasted two seasons.
