Synopsis by Dan Pavlides
An artisan who makes altarpieces from wood comes to town to offer his services to a new church nearing completion. He is caught in the political crossfire of local resentment towards the Greeks who control the clerical services and the Turks who dictate religious affiliations. He falls in love with the sister of a rebel. When the young woman becomes pregnant, her mother forces her to have an abortion that claims her life. The invading Turks round up the artist and he is subjected to being spat upon by the townsfolk. He is content to escape with his life and move on to his next position in another town.
