Synopsis by Mark Deming

A family tragedy brings some people together while forcing others to examine matters they've preferred to ignore in this independent family drama. Amanda (Beverly Todd) was a successful and free-spirited musician whose life was cut short by breast cancer. In the last year of her life, Amanda was helped through her struggle by her niece Maye (Salli Richardson-Whitfield), who moved into Amanda's Topanga Canyon home and looked after her when she was too ill to run her errands herself. Not long after Amanda's passing, Maye is packing up Amanda's belongings and clearing out the house, with many friends and relatives stopping by to claim heirlooms Amanda wanted them to have. To Maye's surprise, the day also brings an unexpected visitor -- Fran (Michole White), Amanda's daughter, who had a falling-out with her mother and now wants to lay claim to her mink coat. As Maye deals with the strong emotions of the day as she wrestles with her memories of her aunt and her interactions with her loved ones, she also has to deal with Fran as they squabble over who truly loved Amanda and did right by her. I Will Follow was the first dramatic feature from director Ava DuVernay, who previously distinguished herself as a documentarian and publicist; the film was an official selection at the American Film Institute's 2010 AFI Fest.
