Synopsis by Mark Deming

An emotionally unstable man finds a friend in an orphaned boy in this German drama from director Hans Weingartner. Martin Blunt (Peter Schneider) was a gifted mathematician and city planner whose life began to spin out of control after he suffered an emotional breakdown and his girlfriend Petra (Julia Jentsch) abandoned him. With no job and no support, Martin is evicted from his apartment and ends up squatting in an abandoned building. Before long, Martin discovers he's not the only one calling the condemned building home -- Viktor (Timur Massold) is a ten-year-old boy from the Ukraine who has been left to his own devices after his mother died of a drug overdose. While they speak different languages, Martin and Viktor strike up a friendship, and discover they both believe in the curative powers of nature. Martin and Viktor flee the city and make a home for themselves in the forest, where they support themselves reclaiming scrap and returnables while building a small home. But while Martin may seem happier and healthier in his new environment, the chaos inside him threatens to reemerge when circumstances take a turn for the worse. Hut In The Woods was an official selection at the 2011 London Film Festival.
