Ruth, an orphan (Irva Ross), is adopted by a brutish couple, and when she grows into a pretty young woman, they sell her to Varney, a corrupt politician. She runs away from him and finds refuge with yet another politician who makes her his secretary. It turns out that he is in cahoots with Varney, and after he attacks her, she runs off to a young district attorney with information about the political machinations. Eventually Ruth wrests herself from all this intrigue, becomes a nurse, and ends up falling in love with a doctor who had once been her mother's beau.
