Synopsis by Hal Erickson
This weekly children's sports series was hosted by Howard Meeker, former coach of the Toronto Maple Leaf hockey squad. Unlike many other sports celebrities, Meeker had established a reputation as an intelligent, literate play-by-play commentator, as well as a perceptive critic of sports in general and hockey in particular (and, miraculously, he still had most of his teeth). During each TV season, Meeker would guide a group of 36 boys, ages eight to 12, through the rudiments of hockey, taking great care to instill a respect for the game and to avoid unnecessary roughness. Broadcast in 15-minute doses, Howie Meeker's Hockey School was telecast seasonally beginning September 19, 1973, and ending March 27, 1977.
