The National Park Service was created in 1916 to safeguard and preserve unique and beautiful wild areas within the United States, conserving their natural resources and keeping them safe from exploitation and destruction. Beginning with the protection of Yosemite and Yellowstone, Park Service work (which has involved a great deal of energy and decision-making) has survived through many tense and complicated periods, including the Great Depression and World War II. Presenting rare historic footage and interesting scenes of well-known parks in the early 1900s, as well as by works by famous artists and classic posters from the 1930s, the documentary offers a compelling history and explores the ideals and accomplishments of leaders and conservationists such as Stephen T. Mather, Horace M. Albright, George Catlin, John Muir, President Theodore Roosevelt, and Franklin D. Roosevelt.
