In a rural Appalachian community, a young J.D. Vance (Gabriel Basso) grapples with poverty, abuse, and addiction at the hands of Bev (Amy Adams), his unstable and selfish mother. When his rough yet loving grandmother (Glenn Close) assumes responsibility for his upbringing, an inspired J.D. resolves to pursue a university education despite his disadvantaged upbringing.
