Review by Craig Butler

High Time is never going to top anyone's list of the best musicals (or comedies or Bing Crosby films) ever made, but it's an engaging and modest little film. It also has an innocence and naïveté to it that is rather refreshing -- and quite rare for a Blake Edwards picture. Still, it's admittedly slight, the kind of "high concept" film that too often coasts along on its concept without ever expanding on it. The humor is often dated and frequently forced, and the big comic highlight -- Bing dressed up as Scarlett O'Hara -- doesn't really pay off. But Crosby, laconic and easygoing as ever, keeps things on track, especially when given the chance to sing "The Second Time Around" (one of the few Jimmy Van Heusen songs that's worthy of its reputation.) Nicole Maurey is fine in a standard, undemanding Crosby love interest role, and Tuesday Weld makes an impression as one of the kids, but only Gavin MacLeod really manages to steal any attention away from Crosby. As with many Edwards films, it's a bit too long and the pacing is erratic, but on the whole, High Time is an enjoyable little flick.
