Synopsis by Mark Deming

A student who wants to get ahead is dragged into a netherworld of fear and danger in this horror film from China. Jiang Yan (Song Jia) is working on her graduate degree in psychology at a university in Northern China, and along with several other students she's vying for a scholarship that will allow her to study in the United States. Liu Feng (Shi Liang), one of Jiang's professors, is also the man who will choose the lucky student who will go to America; while Jiang is working hard on her dissertation project, in which she's profiling a delusional man who is convinced his late daughter is still alive, she's looking for any advantage she can muster, and she's furious when she learns one of her chief rivals, Xiao Lin (Asiru), has been sleeping with Liu. Jiang's boyfriend Wu Zheng (Zhu Hongjia) begins to suspect that she might try to seduce Liu to even the playing field, leading to a violent argument in which she knocks him unconscious. When Liu stops by Jiang's apartment while Wu is out cold, he "helps" her by killing the young man with some household tools, and soon Jiang suspects she's tumbled into some sort of nightmare, as Liu implicates her in the murder and Wu's ghost follows her everywhere.
