Synopsis by Elizabeth Smith
During the first 60 years of the 20th century, many Americans watched baseball and football games, Olympic competitions, and matches between top wrestlers and golfers. Volume two of this four-part series focuses on the sports heroes who inspired young people and entertained their elders. Babe Ruth, Joe Louis, Knute Rockne, and Lou Gehrig are just a few of the champions profiled. The careers of Jack Dempsey, Jackie Robinson, Arnold Palmer, Willie Mays, and Jesse Owens are also reviewed. The footage contained in this volume was compiled from the Hearst News Reel Archives. The other three titles in this series are Headlines Stories of the Century: America in the News, Headline Stories of the Century: American Nostalgia, and Headline Stories of the Century: World War II.
