An unsuspecting viewer may be excused for feeling slightly puzzled as the name James M. Cain is flashed across the screen in the opening credits of this standard piece of Universal hokum. It is hard to say exactly what Cain contributed to Gypsy Wildcat, but it couldn't possibly have been the ridiculously arch lines delivered by the likes of Maria Montez and Jon Hall. This colorful duo had earlier romped through several highly popular fairy tales set somewhere in the vicinity of Baghdad and the producers obviously decided to give them a break by changing the locale to 17th century Europe. But the scenery remains about the same and Gypsy Wildcat resembles nothing so much as a Technicolor Western without any Indians.
