Synopsis by Bhob Stewart
This allegorical Taiwanese comedy begins when the government closes the main Taiwan north-south highway for 12 hours, creating chaotic traffic jams spilling onto side roads and affecting several lives: Stressed-out chauffeur Lo Li-tung (Chang Shih), who hates his job, gets increasingly hyper; hooker Jade (pop star Annie Shizuka Inoh) steals a car but keeps in contact with the owner (composer Jerry Huang) via cellular phone; several puppeteers become lost; and a hitman (To Tzong-hua) hijacks a bus driven by an older man (Gu Bao-ming). Based on short stories by Kuo Cheng, this film was shown at several 1997 film festivals (London, Toronto, Vancouver).
