Synopsis by Eleanor Mannikka
This standard children's story is about a young Turkish boy from an impoverished family living in a small village. The family depends on the sale of their farm produce for sustenance, and that economic mainstay has not been doing very well for them. Meanwhile, the little boy is learning all about village life and the world around him, though his brother's accounts of how things work may not always receive the kind of understanding intended. One day, the father is so dispirited by his low income that he has an idea to take his young son's pet rooster, named Gulibik, and enter him in a cock-fight. That would be a chance to bring some needed money into the family coffers -- but it is not a decision that was lightly made because the father -- and the son -- know the consequences if Gubilik loses his first match.
