Synopsis by Rose of Sharon Winter

This program is part of a series that features the lives and careers of some of the greatest figures in sports. The subject of this episode proves the old chestnut that great things have small beginnings. Passed over by Notre Dame and the Pittsburgh Steelers, Johnny Unitas went on to become arguably the greatest quarterback in pro football history. The field general for 17 seasons with the Baltimore Colts, hall of famer Unitas still holds numerous records gained during the thrilling final minutes touchdown drives for which he was famous. Fans still recall his amazing performance in the 1958 championship game when the Colts beat the New York Giants, considered by many to be the greatest professional football game of all time. Archival film clips, photographs, and interviews with fellow players, coaches, fans, friends, and family tell the story of this sports legend.
