Stefan Pielek is a Polish immigrant to Belgium. When his suicide attempt is unsuccessful, he is hauled in by the police who inform him that he has broken the law; there can be no suicides without permission. He duly applies for that permission and awaits future developments. Instead, he meets a young woman and she awakens in him a desire to live.
