Concerned that her husband Richard (Edward Herrmann) has become disturbingly aloof and argumentative at home, Emily (Kelly Bishop) tries to cheer him up by organizing the society debut of their granddaughter Rory (Alexis Bledel). Unfortunately, tradition demands that Rory be "presented" by her father Christopher (David Sutcliffe) -- who of course ran out on the girl and her unwed mother, Lorelai (Lauren Graham), years earlier. When asked to escort Rory, the customarily dishevelled and unreliable Christopher not only accepts the invitation but also arrives in a clean new suit announcing that he has taken a good, respectable job. As it turns out, these are not the only surprises that Christopher has in store for Lorelai and her family -- nor is Richard any slouch in the "surprise" department himself.
