Claudia Cardinale, Jeanne Moreau, Michael Lonsdale top-line director Manoel de Oliveira's lavish adaptation of Raul Brandão's celebrated 1923 stage-play. Set in the lat 19th Century, the story centers on an aging, impoverished couple ($Lonsdale} and Cardinale) who have taken in their prodigal son's wife (Leonor Silveria) while awaiting his return following an eight-year absence.
