Synopsis by Nathan Southern

The cataclysmic earthquake that befell Port-au-Prince, Haiti on January 12, 2010 came close to completely destroying the surrounding country. So overwhelming, in fact, were the geographic annihilation and death toll that they outstripped the fallout of nearly every earthquake in recorded history; an estimated 230,000 citizens died, while innumerable others lacked food, water, and/or shelter. In the days that followed, both the United Nations and the vestiges of the Haitian government attempted to respond to the situation, but did so unsuccessfully given the magnitude of the crisis. This special from the PBS series Frontline finds correspondent Martin Smith arriving in Port-au-Prince days after the disaster, and surveying both the overwhelming damage and the inadequate relief efforts of Haiti itself. The program incorporates elements including interviews with government officials and humanitarian workers around the world, and asks probing, penetrating questions about how the overall public response could have been more effective.
