Review by Mark Deming

Charles Bronson starring in a romantic comedy? It sounds like a joke, but the real surprise is that From Noon Till Three happens to be quite good. While neither comedy nor romance appears to come naturally to Bronson, in this film his unease works in his favor. He seems as puzzled as he is pleased to have stumbled into an afternoon of passion, and, when he later finds himself celebrated as the world's greatest lover, his flat, disbelieving look (as if someone were telling him that the sky isn't blue) may be more effective than the reactions of a more "comic" actor. It also helps that Bronson was teamed with his then-wife, Jill Ireland, in one of their rare screen pairings in which she pulls her own weight, and the couple displays a genuine and winning romantic chemistry. But the real credit for this film goes to writer and director Frank D. Gilroy. Like The Gig and Once in Paris..., two other Gilroy features that many viewers missed, the funny and charming From Noon Till Three may have been too subtle for mainstream audiences and too mainstream for the arthouse crowd. Though well reviewed, it has never found the audience it deserves.
