Synopsis by Nathan Southern
Guitar maestro Fred Sokolow hosts this instructional program, which teaches viewers how to perform solo on six old standards, including "Autumn Leaves" and "Moonglow". The program counters the idea that only extremely sophisticated performers can play jazz, by making the basic techniques (and accompanying arrangements) accessible for even novice performers. In each case, Sokolow begins by performing and singing each song, then discusses the more complex and tricky passages, which are played more slowly, on a split screen with close-ups of the instructor's hands. The program emphasizes and utilizes a relaxed yet intuitive approach to guitar lessons.
