Synopsis by Nathan Southern
With a setup and subject that inevitably recall Wim Wenders' Chambre 666 (1982), Italian co-directors Ciro Giorgini, Enrico Ghezzi, and Stefano Francia di Celle co-helm the "conversation piece" documentary Fragments of Cinema and Philosophy. The work constitutes a visual and aural document of the discussions that unfurled at the fourth annual Wind of Cinema festival, from September 21 through September 25, 2006, on the island of Procida in Naples, Italy. The festival itself has long been designed as a platform on which filmmakers can engage in extended discussions about philosophy and about motion pictures as an art form; the running theme of the 2006 festival was "Catastriumph" -- the world itself as a descent into catastrophe, cinema as a catastrophe, catastrophes to be shot on film, and many other subtopics. Those participating in the discussions include Werner Herzog, Amos Gitai, philosopher Boris Groys, and many others. Within the film, conversations unfold against the backdrop of such exotic locales as the Gardens of Elsa and the beauteous harbor of La Corricella.
