Synopsis by Mark Deming

Filmmaker Agnie Lukasiak chronicles the lives of two Polish women and their desperate struggle to build new lives for themselves in this documentary. Ania and Gosia were born and raised in a small village in rural Poland, which was once home to labor camps during the era of Communist rule in Eastern Europe. However, since the fall of the Soviet Union and the rise of capitalism, nothing has come along to replace the role of the collective farms in the Polish economy, and with their hometown slowly crumbling into dust, the young women decide to move to Warsaw, hoping that they can escape the cycle of poverty in the big city. However, Ania and Gosia are just two of the hundreds of thousands of Poles who have come to Warsaw looking for work, and the film examines the emotional tug of war between their lifelong home and their desire to make a better living for themselves and their families. Forgotten received its North American premiere at the 2007 Full Frame Documentary Film Festival.
