Synopsis by Mark Deming
Peter Stillwell and Hank Bolen are next-door neighbors, close friends, and polar opposites in terms of their personalities and beliefs. Stillwell is a serious family man with an abiding faith in God, while Bolen is an atheist and happily childless. One day Peter's son gets into Hank's pool and drowns, causing a heartbroken Peter to attack Hank as he wonders aloud why God would punish him for the sins of his friend.
