Synopsis by Mark Deming

A bizarre non-narrative sexploitation opus shot in New York City, Fluctuations plays like a mixture of perverse "roughie" loops and an experimental film as it documents the strange sexual peccadillos of a handful of nameless hipsters. As the soundtrack jumps back and forth between readings from erotic books, a long telephone conversation between a libertine couple, and lots of heavy breathing, we witness hair-whipping, toe sucking, group sex, stripping, cross dressing, and other types of edgeplay intercut with images of a pair of karate students kicking and chopping at one another until they're eventually joined by a half-dressed woman. Fluctuations enjoyed a very brief theatrical run in 1969 but was all but unknown until it was unearthed for home video release by sleaze movie archivists Something Weird Video.
