Synopsis by Mark Deming
Independent Chinese filmmaker Zhao Jisong (an assumed name for a director who works outside the state-sanctioned industry) co-wrote and directed this stylishly spare drama. After a lawyer is raped, she hires a cab driver to help her track down the passenger who committed the crime. The cabbie soon finds himself attracted to the attorney, as well as a hairdresser he's long had his eye on. Neither affection is returned, and the driver's frustrations begin to mount. Fengjing (aka Scenery) received its world premiere at the 1999 Rotterdam Film Festival.
