Lejba, a Jewish innkeeper (Andre Heller) in Portugal at the beginning of the 20th century, is worried about his pregnant wife (Aviva Gaire) and their future. Holy Week is near, but it is overshadowed by the menacing arrival of Georg (Pedro Efe) who has vowed to kill Lejba in revenge for a past wrong. Although Lejba manages to recruit three allies -- a schoolteacher, a monk, and the mayor of the town, the latter won over with a bribe -- he remains in real danger from Georg. Making matters much worse, Lejba is increasingly shunned by everyone else when anti-Semitism runs high as Holy Week begins. As though caught in an ever-tightening vise, Lejba has no where to turn when a young couple is found murdered and Georg accuses him of the act. Meanwhile, the monk is killed in an attempt to protect Lejba, leaving him even more isolated in a clearly life-threatening situation. When the Paschal Feast begins and everyone is in church, Georg sets out to kill Lejba, who has barricaded himself in his inn. Suspense continues to heighten, reaching a crescendo as the story comes to its dramatic end.
