Synopsis by Alice Day
Two of the most hard-fought battles of the Pacific theatre occurred at Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima. Famous Marine Battles: Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima looks at these massive struggles, in which extremely heavy casualties and injuries were sustained by the U.S. Marines. The two islands were controlled by the Japanese, and the U.S. military command felt it imperative to take both, because they were used as strategic air and naval bases. The battle at Iwo Jima was the source for the famous photo of Marines raising the U.S. flag, later made into the Marine Memorial.
