Synopsis by Cecilia Cygnar
Part of the Famous Composers video series, this documentary tells the story of late 19th century German opera composer Richard Wagner. Combining musical composition with German myths and stories, Wagner is known for some of Germany's most famous operas. He also is recognized for creating a new type of musical form, where music, verse, and production staging are combined in something he called Gesamtkunstwerk. One of Wagner's most famous works is his opera The Ring, but he also wrote Tristan und Isolde and Der Fluegende Hollander (The Flying Dutchman), among many others. The famed Elysian Ensemble provides the musical accompaniment for this video.
