Synopsis by Cecilia Cygnar
Part of the Famous Composers video series, this documentary tells the story of German opera composer and conductor Richard Strauss. As a composer, he is best known for his operas, but Strauss also experimented with tone poems, in which he put poems to the music of Franz Liszt. His tone poems were filled with passion and emotion, just as his operas were. Some of his most famous operas include Der Rosenkavalier, Salome, and Elektra. Later in his life, he lost much of his fortune and this financial ruin affected the quality of his later work. The famed Elysian Ensemble provides the musical accompaniment for this video.
