Review by Linda Rasmussen

Don't be deceived by the surreal, creepy promotional artwork -- this tired, unimaginative slasher-thriller plays like a sleazy TV movie-of-the-week punctuated with gory murder scenes (courtesy of makeup effects wizard Tom Savini) and would have vanished into obscurity if not promoted as the big-screen debut of The Love Boat's Julie, Lauren Tewes. Tewes manages a tenuous grip on her nice-girl image as a squeaky-clean TV news anchor who slowly begins to suspect that the man in the apartment adjacent to her own is none other than a notorious murderer and rapist, whose reign of terror she has been regularly documenting on the nightly news. Of course, the killer eventually becomes aware of Tewes's less-than-discreet snooping, after which she fights to save both herself and her blind sister (Jennifer Jason Leigh) from the inevitable bloody confrontation. Occasionally stylish visuals and fairly classy production design can't disguise the mediocre, misogynist slasher plot -- definitely a step backward for director Ken Wiederhorn after his impressive horror bow, Shock Waves.
