Synopsis by Hal Erickson
This Vitagraph drama is almost as somber as its title. Set in Italy (actually upstate New York), the story concerns the young wife of an aging aristocrat. The woman leaves her husband in favor of a rakish roue, whereupon the old man vows revenge. A few months later, the philandering wife has emigrated to New Jersey with her lover, who has grown tired of the woman and is now playing the field himself. Finding her paramour in the arms of another girl, the heroine attacks her caddish lover, whereupon he strangles her to death. As luck would have it, the old husband has arrived in America just in time to witness the murder. He kills the lover then carries his young wife's body back to her tiny apartment. Overcome by grief, the husband collapses and dies at his wife's bedside.
