This operatic presentation of a female revolutionary who inspires her followers to revolt against the Spaniards, creates no ideal class of citizens in the push for independence from Spain. The Filipino Catholics turn out to be as much of a threat as the Spaniards themselves, and the British who are called upon for help in a time of need seem not much different from the oppressive Spanish overlords.
