Review by Buzz McClain

This is one feature film that could have benefited from a laugh track. Not that Dudley Do-Right isn't funny -- and, really, it's not -- it's merely smile-inducing, with loads of clever bits within bits, and all the puns you would expect from a film based on characters created by cartoondom's finest Jay Ward. But farce is hard to do, and in this case, the actors and writers worked too hard, slowing things down with long pauses after the jokes, as if everyone on camera is waiting to hear the laugh, or, in this case, to figuratively ask the audience, "Get it?" Brendan Fraser, his goofy grin and indomitable spirit on adequate display in yet another starring role as a cartoon character (George of the Jungle), is ideal casting for the title role, a hapless Canadian Mountie, and Alfred Molina eventually grows on you as the moustache-spinning Snidely Whiplash. But Sarah Jessica Parker, no doubt cast as Nell Fenwick to give the daddies in the audience for this family film something to think about, isn't quite game for the nuttiness required of a live-action cartoon, which can be said for the bulk of the film in general.
