It's safe to say The Drug Connection will never win any critical awards: it is extremely exploitative in both the sex and violence departments and the storyline shamelessly rips off of the Pam Grier vehicle Coffy scene for scene. It's the kind of movie that has more than one sequence wherein the heroine fights bad guys while topless and the evil syndicate kingpin has a private S & M torture chamber in his mansion. That said, if you can embrace the film's inherent schlockiness then The Drug Connection will provide a trashy good time. Sun Chung directs this film with a feverish sense of style, using the widescreen frame and a garish color scheme to turn the film into an amped-up, sleazy comic book brought to life. Genre fans will be happy to know that The Drug Connection also boasts plenty of solid action, working some kung fu in along with the usual gun-driven action. Finally, it benefits from a charismatic lead performance by Chen Ping, who rises above the eye-candy requirements of the role to deliver a performance whose melodramatic intensity lives up to the lurid storyline. When she picks up a shotgun to take on the boss and his thugs at the end, the resulting action set piece is the kind of stuff B-movie dreams are made of. Suffice to say, your appreciation for The Drug Connection will depend on your tolerance for sleaze, but any fan of low-down cinema will get his or her money's worth here.
