Synopsis by Alice Day
The ability of a musician to improvise within a jazz ensemble is remarkable to see and hear. The film Doug Munro: Jazz/Blues Improvisation for All Instruments offers instruction in basic skills needed to accomplish this feat, as related to 12-bar blues. Mastering the major scales in each key is of prime importance, as is learning the dominant 7th, minor pentatonic, and blues scales. Some riffs are demonstrated and are meant to be built upon, as instruction is given on tri-tones, interval leaps, and arpeggios. The program also covers soloing and communication with other players in the group.
