Polio is no longer the frightening killer it once was, attacking the central nervous systems of young victims. The random way in which it struck added to the fear, and parents were not sure how to protect their children from its crippling effects. Many died, or were confined to iron lungs in epidemics that seemed to increase during the summer months. Doctor Is In: Polio and Post-Polio Syndrome looks at a problem that afflicts survivors of the disease, called post-polio syndrome. Its symptoms include muscle weakness, muscle and joint pain, and muscle atrophy.
