Synopsis by Rose of Sharon Winter

This film is part of a series which traces art developments and some of its practitioners from the Renaissance to the 20th century. Beautifully illustrated, the series focuses on the works of some of the greatest artists of the times. In this episode, the film profiles Eugene Delacroix, considered to be the leading painter of the French Romantic movement. Born in 1798, Delacroix was influenced greatly by a trip to North Africa. His technique became free and fluid, with brilliant color. His work, often of religious themes, met with great resistance from the critics of the day. Art historians share their perspectives, while the viewer observes the artist's work.
