Synopsis by Hal Erickson
The three-reel British drama The Devil's Profession was based on a poem by Mrs. Wentworth-James. Most of the story takes place in a shady lunatic asylum, where many of the inmates are perfectly sane but kept under control with illegal drugs. The owner of the asylum (Robert Clensy) works hand in hand with unscrupulous citizens who hope to gain inheritances and the like by locking up "awkward" relatives. The villain is eventually thwarted when one of his patients blinds him with a bottle of vitriol. Stumbling and flailing about, the crooked sanitarium proprietor falls out of a window to his death. One suspects that Mrs. Wentworth-James' original poem was not a love sonnet.
